Milan Piya has recently stepped down from his role as chair of the YDEF. In his year as chair, he managed the transition of YDF to YDEF and helped set up the Diabetes UK Local Clinical Champions program. He has been on the YDEF Committee since 2010 and during his time on the committee, he has organised the YDEF day in 2013, and set up the YDF Retinopathy course in Heart of England Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Centre based in the Diabetes Centre in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital in 2011. He has also organised the YDF Research Day in September 2011 in University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire / University of Warwick.
Milan Piya has worked as a Specialist Registrar in the Northwest of England for over 2 years and as a Clinical Lecturer in the University of Birmingham for over 2 years. He has recently completed his PhD in Obesity under the supervision of Professor Sudhesh Kumar in Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick. He combined laboratory in vitro work on adipocytes with clinical research, studying the effect of meal frequency on human energy expenditure using whole body calorimetry in the newly formed Human Metabolism Research Unit based in University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in partnership with Warwick Medical School. He is now working as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in the same department and is in the final year of his training.
